Re-EDucation

Re-EDucation, or Re-ED, is a model of treatment created by Dr. Nicholas Hobbs nearly half a century ago, and which still commands the attention of the field. The Re-ED banner is currently held by the American Re-ED Association, or AREA, founded in 1982 and currently located in Ohio.

Ecological approaches see the person and the setting as inextricably related, and recognize that behavior acceptable in one setting may be quite inappropriate in another.

Re-ED is an ecological model that views the child as inseparable from his family and social context.  Treatment impacts the different settings of the child's life space through careful coordination of care. Re-ED is  strength-based, emphasizing children's assets and the importance of relationship and structure for children and youth. It is holistic, concerned with physical as well as mental health. Myriad applications to disturbed children inside and out of school settings have demonstrated the effectiveness of the Re-ED model in its various manifestations.
